The History of NAREB and the Real Estate Industry in America

NAREB National Association of Real Estate Brokers

The National Association of Real Estate Brokers (NAREB) has played an integral role in shaping the real estate industry in America, especially for professionals and consumers of color.  NAREB was established on July 29, 1947, in Tampa, Florida, by a group of African American real estate professionals. This formation was a response to the exclusionary practices of the National Association of Realtors (NAR), which at the time did not allow Black members. NAREB's founding members sought to create an organization that would champion fair housing and equal opportunities in the real estate industry. During a time of significant racial segregation and discrimination, NAREB has been at the forefront of advocating for equal housing opportunities and professional growth for African American real estate professionals.

NAREB's mission was clear from the outset: to ensure that African Americans had the same opportunities in real estate as their white counterparts. This included advocating for the right to own property, access to fair housing, and the ability to work as licensed real estate professionals.

Undoubtedly NAREB founders and trailblazers faces many challenges since its inception and have worked direct with some of the profound civil rights leaders in the shaping the organization and its efforts including the advancement of Fair Housing Rights in the United States.

One of the organization's early achievements was the creation of the term "Realtist" to distinguish its members from those of NAR. This term symbolized the commitment to professionalism and ethical standards that NAREB members upheld.

The Real Estate Industry in America

The real estate industry in America has its roots in the colonial era when land ownership was a crucial factor in determining social and economic status. Over time, the industry evolved, with the establishment of land offices and real estate firms that facilitated the buying, selling, and leasing of property.

The 19th and early 20th centuries saw significant growth in the real estate industry, driven by urbanization, industrialization, and the expansion of transportation networks. However, this growth also brought about challenges, including speculative bubbles and fraudulent practices.

In response to these issues, the industry saw the introduction of various regulations and professional standards. The establishment of the National Association of Realtors (NAR) in 1908 was a key milestone, as it sought to promote ethical practices and provide education and resources to real estate professionals.

Within this broader context, NAREB emerged as a vital advocate for African American real estate professionals and their clients. The organization worked tirelessly to address the systemic barriers that limited access to housing and real estate opportunities for Black Americans.

Throughout the mid-20th century, NAREB played a significant role in the civil rights movement, partnering with other organizations to fight for fair housing legislation. The passage of the Fair Housing Act in 1968 was a landmark victory, prohibiting discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin in the sale, rental, and financing of housing.

In the decades following the Fair Housing Act, NAREB continued to advocate for policies and practices that promote equal housing opportunities. The organization has been involved in various initiatives aimed at closing the homeownership gap between Black and white Americans and addressing issues such as predatory lending and housing affordability.

NAREB has grown to focused on the professional development of its members, offering training, resources, and networking opportunities to help African American real estate professionals succeed in a competitive industry. The organization's annual conventions and regional conferences provide platforms for education, advocacy, and collaboration. In the past year NAREB has launched the Developers Academy and Multi-City Tour. NAREB’s National Conventions are always a time to for education and fellowship among its members nationwide.

As NAREB looks to the future, its commitment to promoting fair housing and professional excellence remains steadfast. The organization continues to address the evolving challenges of the real estate market, including digital transformation, changing demographics, and economic disparities.

NAREB is embracing innovative solutions to meet these challenges, such as leveraging technology to enhance real estate transactions, advocating for policies that support affordable housing, and fostering partnerships with other industry stakeholders.

The legacy of NAREB and its impact on the real estate industry in America are profound. By championing the rights of African American real estate professionals and their clients, NAREB has helped to create a more inclusive and equitable industry. The organization's efforts have not only benefited its members but have also contributed to the broader goal of social justice and economic empowerment.

The history of NAREB and the real estate industry in America is a testament to the power of advocacy, resilience, and community. From its founding in 1947 to its ongoing efforts today, NAREB has been a driving force for change, ensuring that all individuals have the opportunity to achieve the American dream of homeownership. As industry continues to evolve, NAREB's mission and values will remain as relevant and vital as ever.

As a NAREB member of the Queens Realtist Chapter and former appointed chair member within the chapter I have had the honor of working closely with the Queens Realtist Chapter President Janay Malloy to carry out the community goals and initiatives the organization upholds. Moving forward the existence and the initiative of  this organization with continue to be an integral part of homeowners ship for many Americans especially those of color.
